Easing Back Into School With Your Pet
Fall brings many transitions. We shared some tips for approaching this change of seasons in our last post. Today, we’re going to focus on back-to-school time, one of the biggest fall transitions for our families!
It is no small thing for families to adjust to kids going from summer vacation mode to a structured back-to-school routine. Everything changes, from your family’s schedule to meals. It’s no wonder that your pet might feel a little bit discombobulated, too. Here are some things to consider to make the transition easier on your pet, too.
Pets bond closely with children and may also feel a loss when they return to school, most especially if a child is attending school for the very first time. So that your pet doesn’t feel neglected, try planning family activities when everyone’s together. PureLife 4 Pets offers helpful suggestions to involve your children in morning or afternoon routines like feeding, brushing, or walking your pet and to plan weekend activities like trips to the park or family hikes. Some pets also enjoy accompanying everyone to the bus stop.
When your kids return to school, your pet might find him or herself with more solo time. Daily walks are so important in calming your pet’s mind and overall demeanor. How your kids say goodbye to your pets on the way to school can also make a difference. Dr. Nick Dodman of Tuft’s University school of veterinary medicine suggests making the goodbye positive with treats or toys and to avoid too much “baby talk or sympathy.”
You can also consider researching your local doggie day care options or hiring a pet sitter to pop in during the lunch hour. Veterinarians are also great resources for separation anxiety.
