Christmas Tree Decorating Tips To Keep Your Pets Safe

As we approach Thanksgiving, the holidays are on our mind. You may even be getting a head start on Christmas shopping and holiday decorating. Before you display that poinsettia or decorate your tree, consider these suggestions for holiday decorating that are both people and pet friendly.

Christmas Trees: Dogs are also enamored with Christmas trees, even if it’s to their detriment. In general, Christmas trees are mildly poisonous to pets. Veterinarian Janet Tobiassen Crosby explains how they can cause irritation to a pet’s mouth and stomach. Remember to sweep-up any extra pine needles since they can cause blockages and punctures to your pet’s digestive system.

Decorating the tree is a beloved tradition. To prevent choking and electrical hazards, Pet MD recommends placing decorations like tinsel, ornaments, and lights on the tree above your dog’s reach. Sit back and enjoy the comforting flicker of Christmas tree lights with your furry friend and keep it safe by unplugging the lights when you leave.

People often place Christmas trees in a base of water that contains fertilizer or sugar to extend their freshness. Even if you do not add any chemicals to the water, the tree may have been sprayed with pesticides and fertilizers, which can leach into the base. We encourage pet owners to cover the base to prevent cats and dogs from drinking from it. The Daily Cat suggests covering the base with plastic wrap, foil, or burlap.

Other Holiday Plants: According to the Purdue University Plant and Pest Diagnostic Laboratory, Poinsettias are mildly toxic to cats and dogs, but pose less risk than mistletoe, holly, lilies and daffodils, which are very toxic. When in doubt, consult your vet and place plants out of your pet’s reach.
