November Is Senior Pet Month

Welcome to the beginning of Senior Pet Month.

Every November, the ASPCA dedicates extra care to highlighting our older four-legged friends. Those of us with a senior pet in our family know how special they are. Our older cat and dog friends aren’t just pets, they’re family. Unfortunately, many senior pets languish in animal shelters waiting for their forever homes.

Here are some reasons why senior pets make wonderful companions and some special considerations for their needs:

Senior pets are typically potty trained! For many senior pets, potty training is ancient history. They already know how to use a litter box and will wait until you can let them outside.

Senior pets are mellow. Puppies and kitties are bundles of energetic joy. They take dedicated owners with the time and patience to walk and play with them. Older pets still need to play and exercise but are typically mellower. They got all of their frenetic puppy and kitty energy out of their systems years ago. Oftentimes, older adults and older pets make wonderful companions.

Senior pets were young once. We all were! Dogs and cats are surrendered to animal shelters for so many reasons. Many times, people give away their pets because of a move, change in finances, or health care issue. Some people simply don’t think long-term when they decide to purchase a pet in the first place. A five-year old dog and even a 10-year old cat can have at least 10 wonderful years ahead of them. They’re craving a new pack to join and can offer as much love and loyalty as a puppy or kitten.

It’s true. Senior pets can experience changes in their bodies just like people. Sometimes a simple change in diet or bed can relieve symptoms of aging. Connect with your local vet for medical advice.

At In Home Pet Sitters, we give dogs of all ages special consideration and care in your home or ours. Call us at 321-794-4477 for more information about how we can help.
