Summertime brings a season of fireworks and summer fun. Unfortunately, fireworks are not fun and games for our pets. Many pets are traumatized at the sound of fireworks. Here are some tips on how to get through this season of noise!

Most importantly, keep your pets inside when fireworks are being let off. Many pets will run and you may find your pet running away at a rapid pace. Don’t be the person that reports the missing pet, due to fireworks going off. If possible, plan ahead, take a long walk with your pet before sunset. This way you won’t find yourself venturing out at dusk when the booms start occurring.

If your pet is not micro chipped, this would be a good time to follow through with it. Should your pet decide to run, it will be easier being reunited in the future if it is micro chipped. Plan ahead if possible, so you are not faced with an emergency situation.

Most importantly remain calm. If you, yourself do not remain calm, your pet will be more apt to be upset. It’s OK to cuddle and stroke your pet if it helps them relax, but if they prefer to hide under your bed, then let them do this instead.

Avoid leaving your pet alone during such potentially upsetting events. If you do have to leave the house, don’t get angry with your pet if you find they have been destructive or toileted after being left on its own. Shouting at a frightened pet will only make them more stressed. If you don’t like the loud booms, chances are, your pet will not either.

Most importantly, never take your pet to a public fireworks display. This is where you may find out how fast your pet runs and you may also find out that your pet can get very upset when fireworks go off.
